Major Shake-up Looming for Bangladesh Police Leadership

In a definitive move to recalibrate the nation’s internal security apparatus, the Home Minister, Salahuddin Ahmed, has announced that significant changes are imminent within the upper echelons of the Bangladesh Police. This strategic restructuring follows high-level consultations at the Secretariat on Sunday, signaling the new administration’s intent to refine law enforcement operations.

Parliamentary Session Scheduled for March

Speaking to journalists following a courtesy meeting at the Prime Minister’s Office within the Cabinet Division, the Home Minister also confirmed the timeline for the next parliamentary session. Upon the advice of the Prime Minister, the President is set to convene the National Parliament on 12 March 2026.

The Minister explained the procedural requirements, noting that a presidential notification for summoning a session must be issued at least 15 days in advance. “The summary from the Parliament Secretariat will proceed through the Prime Minister’s Office to the President for formal approval,” Minister Ahmed clarified.

Agenda for the Upcoming Session

The March session is expected to be a cornerstone of legislative transition. Key objectives include:

Election of the Speaker and Deputy Speaker: Establishing the formal leadership of the House.

Legislative Ratification: Tabling and formalising various ordinances enacted during the tenure of the interim government.

Presidential Address: A traditional speech by the President outlining the government’s vision.

Routine Governance: Addressing standard parliamentary inquiries and administrative functions.

Zero Tolerance for Criminality

Addressing recent security concerns, particularly the reports of “terrorist activities” in the Adabor area of Mohammadpur, the Home Minister maintained a stern posture. He confirmed that the ministry has already initiated a formal investigation.

“Such reports have reached our ears,” the Minister stated firmly. “I have ordered a thorough investigation and a detailed report. Should the allegations prove true, we shall take the most stringent measures possible. There is no room for lawlessness in this administration.”

While questions regarding the election of a new President were raised, Minister Ahmed noted that such discussions have not yet commenced, focusing instead on the immediate stability of the police force and the resumption of parliamentary duties.
