A young man was fatally stabbed in a violent altercation in Kalaroa upazila of Satkhira District on Monday afternoon, prompting the arrest of the alleged assailant. The deceased, Ibrahim Hossain, 30, was a resident of Satpota Berbari village under the Keralakata Union of the upazila.
According to local sources and eyewitness accounts, the incident stemmed from a long-running dispute over a poultry farm operated within a residential compound. The accused, Ariful Islam—son of Jamal Hossain of the same village—had reportedly established and run a poultry operation in the middle of his homestead. Residents had for some time complained of persistent foul odours emanating from the farm, which they claimed made daily life uncomfortable, particularly for children and elderly inhabitants.
Villagers alleged that although many were distressed by the situation, few dared to voice their objections openly, fearing retaliation. It was further claimed that Ariful had previously reacted aggressively when confronted about the matter.
On Monday, during the holy month of Ramadan, Ibrahim Hossain reportedly protested against the stench from the poultry farm. What began as a verbal exchange quickly escalated into a heated argument. Witnesses state that at one stage Ariful Islam became enraged, retrieved a sharp knife, and attacked Ibrahim.
When Ibrahim’s elder brother, Ruhul Amin, attempted to intervene and shield him, he too was stabbed. Neighbours rushed to the scene and transported the two injured men towards Satkhira Sadar Hospital. However, Ibrahim succumbed to his injuries on the way. Ruhul Amin is currently receiving treatment at the hospital; medical sources indicate that while he sustained serious injuries, his condition is stable.
The officer-in-charge of Kalaroa Police Station confirmed that the suspect has been detained and is being questioned. As of the latest reports, the victim’s family had not yet filed a formal case, though police stated that legal proceedings were underway.
The tragedy has cast a pall of grief over the village. Ibrahim Hossain was the sole breadwinner of his family. He is survived by his wife, who is expecting their second child, and a young son. Relatives say the family is devastated and uncertain about their future.
