Manchester City is reportedly determined to retain one of the finest midfielders of the current era, Rodri, but the Spaniard’s future could take a new turn in the upcoming summer transfer window.
According to the German sports outlet Bild, two of Rodri’s homeland giants, Barcelona and Real Madrid, are preparing to make moves to secure the 2024 Ballon d’Or winner. Despite these rumours, City has made it clear that they are not open to entertaining offers for the 27-year-old.
Ahead of Manchester City’s 2-1 Premier League victory over Newcastle United last Saturday, head coach Pep Guardiola was asked whether Rodri would remain at the Etihad. In response, Guardiola reiterated his desire to keep him.
“I very much want that,” Guardiola said. “Rodri is Rodri. As he grows older, he becomes even wiser and understands the game better.”
Yet, repeated speculation continues to cast doubt over Rodri’s long-term future at the club. Adding further uncertainty is the status of Guardiola himself. Both Rodri and the manager have contracts set to expire next summer. Over the past months, rumours of Guardiola’s potential departure have frequently surfaced. Should the highly successful coach leave for pastures new, the question remains whether Rodri would still commit to City.
Rodri’s recent years have been a mix of triumph and frustration. Since winning the Ballon d’Or, he has struggled with injuries, missing significant portions of the previous season and spending much of his time on the sidelines. His fitness will be a crucial factor in determining the club’s plans and the potential suitors’ interest.

City fans will be watching closely this summer, as decisions by both Rodri and Guardiola could reshape the club’s midfield and leadership structure. With two Spanish powerhouses reportedly ready to enter the fray, the transfer saga promises to be one of the season’s most intriguing storylines.
