Cache of Live Ammunition Discovered in Nagar River

In a startling turn of events in the Singra Upazila of Natore, two young children inadvertently discovered a cache of live ammunition while fishing in the Nagar River. The incident, which occurred in the Katapukuria neighbourhood, has triggered a police investigation into the origin of the discarded munitions.

A Curious Discovery

On Sunday, 22 February, nine-year-old Mostakim Hossain and his seven-year-old brother, Jaber Hossain, sons of local resident Jahangir Alam, headed to the banks of the Nagar River for a routine afternoon of fishing. Whilst wading through the water, the siblings chanced upon a blue plastic container submerged in the riverbed.

Driven by innocent curiosity, the boys retrieved the box and brought it back to their family home. It was not until later that evening, when their father inspected the find, that the gravity of the discovery became apparent. Upon prising open the lid, Jahangir Alam discovered a haul of ammunition and firearm maintenance equipment hidden within.

Police Intervention and Inventory

Following the spread of news regarding the discovery, local authorities were alerted. On Tuesday, 24 February, a team from the Singra Police Station arrived at the residence to formally seize the items. The Officer-in-Charge (OC), Abdun Noor, confirmed the details of the recovery, noting that the ammunition appeared to be professional-grade and well-preserved.

Forensic Significance

The markings found on the base of the cartridges—“CBC 32 AUTO”—indicate that the rounds were manufactured by Companhia Brasileira de Cartuchos, a major Brazilian ammunition producer. The “.32 Auto” (also known as .32 ACP) is a common calibre for semi-automatic pistols. The presence of a cleaning rod and brushes suggests that the box belonged to a firearm owner who may have disposed of the evidence hastily.

OC Abdun Noor stated that the police are currently pursuing legal measures and investigating whether these munitions are linked to any recent criminal activity or the illegal possession of firearms in the region. The riverbed is being monitored to ensure no further hazardous materials remain.
