In a harrowing incident on Wednesday morning, a gas line explosion in the Kachua area of Chāndpur injured three members of the same family. The blast occurred around 8:30 a.m., leaving both men and women affected.
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, Assistant Professor and Resident Doctor at the National Institute of Burn and Plastic Surgery, confirmed the incident and provided details of the victims’ conditions. All three were quickly rescued from the scene and initially treated in the emergency department before being admitted to the institute’s specialised Orange Unit for burn care.
The victims and the severity of their injuries are summarised in the table below:
| Name | Age | Burn Coverage | Condition |
|---|---|---|---|
| Khadija | 30 | 35% | Critical |
| Mahmudul | 35 | 4% | Stable |
| Shiuli Akter | 40 | 2% | Stable |
Dr Shaon Bin Rahman explained that Khadija’s injuries are the most severe, placing her in critical condition, while Mahmudul and Shiuli Akter sustained relatively minor burns and remain stable.
Eyewitnesses reported that the explosion caused flames to engulf parts of the home, accompanied by dense smoke. Local residents acted quickly, rescuing the injured and transporting them to the hospital, thereby preventing potentially worse outcomes.
Initial investigations indicate that the gas line had developed cracks due to long-term neglect and lack of maintenance. Chāndpur local authorities confirmed that officials from the gas supply company inspected the site and have launched a full investigation into the cause of the leak. Residents have been urged to regularly check their household gas lines to avoid similar accidents in the future.
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the hazards associated with domestic gas use, particularly in older or poorly maintained systems. Experts emphasise that timely inspections and repairs are essential to prevent tragedies.
Thanks to the swift response from both local authorities and the community, a larger-scale disaster was avoided. Medical professionals continue to provide intensive care to the victims, with dedicated efforts focused on recovery and minimising complications. Authorities have reiterated public safety advice, urging vigilance and preventive measures in all households using gas connections.
