Kushtia-3 (Sadar) MP Amir Hamza has asserted direct control over his constituency’s public hospitals, stating, “There is no higher authority in Kushtia now; the top authority is me.” His remarks came in the wake of complaints regarding hospital management and service delivery.
Speaking to journalists after a management committee meeting at Kushtia Medical College Hospital Management Committee on Thursday afternoon, Hamza addressed concerns about alleged mismanagement at Kushtia General Hospital. “There were written complaints about both the medical and Sadar hospitals. I submitted these to the hospital administration and set a timeline for corrective action. Initially, they admitted mistakes and even apologised. The issues were beyond our oversight, and responsibility lay with previous higher authorities,” he said. “Now, I am the top authority here. Anything that happens, inform me directly.”
During the press briefing, a journalist raised a concern: patients often cannot find doctors at the medical college, yet the same doctors are reportedly available at private clinics late into the night. Hamza responded firmly: “There are middlemen and other influences at play. Some of these activities have been secretly reported to me. If anyone attempts irregular dealings, they should directly acknowledge any arrangements with relevant religious authorities. I will ensure no one wields unchecked power in Kushtia.”
Hamza also emphasised his commitment to revitalising Kushtia Medical College Hospital. “We are deeply invested in this institution. Several departments are operational, but our goal is to fully reopen and strengthen all services. Yesterday’s meeting lasted two to two-and-a-half hours, and we have already made several decisions. In the coming days, you will hear some positive developments that will bring joy to the public,” he said.
Following his statements, excerpts circulated widely on social media and various news pages, sparking public discussion and criticism. Addressing this, Hamza wrote early Friday morning on his verified Facebook page:
“Dear citizens and supporters, I earnestly request that you refrain from retaliating with harsh words wherever I am criticised. Explain politely or avoid the situation, but do not defend me with abusive language. Truth will prevail over falsehood, and I am not perturbed by twisted media reports.”
