Pakistan Win Dramatic Thriller but Exit World Cup

A somber atmosphere enveloped the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium as the final delivery thudded into the wicketkeeper’s gloves. Despite securing a breathless five-run victory over Sri Lanka, the Pakistan squad stood frozen, devoid of celebration. Their mission had been twofold: win the match and restrict their opponents to a specific total to overhaul New Zealand’s net run rate. While they achieved the former, they failed the latter, confirming their exit from the tournament and handing the Black Caps a semi-final berth alongside England from Super Eight Group 1.

Record-Breaking Openers Set the Stage

After being put in to bat, Pakistan’s openers, Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman, appeared possessed by a singular sense of purpose. The duo dismantled the Sri Lankan attack with a ferocious 176-run opening stand off just 95 deliveries—a new record for the highest partnership for any wicket in World Cup history.

Fakhar Zaman’s blitz of 84 from 42 balls provided the early impetus, but it was Farhan who etched his name into the record books. With a masterful century (100 off 60 balls), Farhan surpassed Virat Kohli’s long-standing record of 319 runs in a single World Cup edition, finishing the tournament with a staggering 383 runs across six innings. He also set a new benchmark for the most sixes in a single T20 World Cup, clearing the ropes 18 times.

The Collapse and the Mathematical Barrier

Despite a platform that promised a total north of 240, Pakistan’s middle order suffered a catastrophic meltdown, losing seven wickets for just 34 runs in the final four overs. This collapse proved fatal to their semi-final ambitions. To leapfrog New Zealand on net run rate, Pakistan needed to restrict Sri Lanka to 147 runs or fewer. Once the Lankans crossed that mark, Pakistan’s fate was sealed, regardless of the eventual result.

A Grandstand Finish

Sri Lanka’s chase was kept alive by a defiant 58 from Prawan Ratnayake and a captain’s knock from Dasun Shanaka (76*). In a heart-stopping final over, Sri Lanka required 28 runs. Shanaka struck a four followed by three consecutive sixes, leaving them needing six runs from the final two balls.

Shaheen Shah Afridi held his nerve, delivered two wide-angled deliveries that beat the bat, though the final ball drew furious glares from the Sri Lankan camp as they appealed for a wide. The umpire remained unmoved, leaving Shanaka slumped on his knees in exhaustion and Pakistan left to wonder what might have been had their middle order shown half the resilience of their openers.
