EBL Launches Inclusive Libraries for Special Needs

Eastern Bank PLC has launched a significant initiative aimed at fostering a more inclusive educational environment for children with special needs. Under its flagship corporate social responsibility programme, Project Progotir, the bank has entered into a strategic partnership with Footsteps Bangladesh to establish specialised libraries tailored to children who are frequently marginalised within mainstream education.

The initiative was formally inaugurated at a ceremony held at the bank’s head office in the capital, where a donation cheque was handed over to representatives of Footsteps Bangladesh. Senior officials from both organisations attended the event and described the project as a long-term investment in inclusive education and social empowerment.

Addressing Structural Gaps

Although enrolment rates in primary and secondary education have risen steadily across Bangladesh in recent years, access to appropriate infrastructure for children with disabilities remains limited. Assessments by education and disability rights organisations suggest that a considerable proportion of children with special educational needs struggle to participate fully in classroom activities due to inadequate assistive materials, inaccessible facilities and a lack of trained support.

Library facilities are particularly underdeveloped in this regard. In many institutions, there is a shortage of Braille books, tactile learning tools, visual communication aids and adaptive technologies. As a result, children with visual, hearing or cognitive impairments often face barriers that hinder their academic progress and social development.

Educational specialists emphasise that an inclusive library serves a purpose far beyond book lending. It can function as a centre for language development, social interaction, emotional regulation and confidence-building. A thoughtfully designed space can significantly enhance both learning outcomes and personal growth.

Features of the Proposed Libraries

The newly planned libraries will incorporate:

Braille and tactile books, alongside adaptive learning materials

Sensory-supportive furniture and a calm, structured environment

Mobility-friendly shelving and accessible infrastructure

Dedicated areas for creative and collaborative learning

Architects and accessibility consultants are contributing to the design process to ensure compliance with universal accessibility standards. Planned features include wide doorways, non-slip flooring, height-adjustable furniture and clear directional signage.

Key Representatives at the Ceremony

The following senior representatives were present at the launch event:

Organisation Name Position
Eastern Bank PLC Ziaul Karim Head of Communications and External Affairs
Eastern Bank PLC Major Mohammad Abdus Salam (Retd.) Head of Administration
Eastern Bank PLC Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun Company Secretary
Eastern Bank PLC Mohammad Maskur Reza Head of Business Technology
Footsteps Bangladesh Mohammad Taki Yasir Co-Founder and Vice-President
Footsteps Bangladesh Ibrahim Daud Abir Programme Director
Footsteps Bangladesh Sadia Tanzim Tania Programme Development and Expansion Officer

Speaking at the ceremony, Ziaul Karim reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to sustainable initiatives that empower marginalised children. Mohammad Taki Yasir highlighted the critical role of supportive learning environments in enhancing children’s confidence and ensuring meaningful participation in society.

Educationists have welcomed the initiative, noting that such projects can help bridge disparities between urban and rural communities. By establishing libraries specifically designed for children with special needs, stakeholders hope to strengthen academic continuity, improve educational attainment and promote long-term social inclusion.

Overall, the initiative represents a constructive step towards advancing equity within the national education landscape and reflects a growing recognition of the importance of inclusive development.
