Rising Tensions Along the Pakistan-Afghanistan Border

Tensions along the Pakistan-Afghanistan border have sharply escalated in recent days, with both nations exchanging military strikes, resulting in significant casualties and damage. Pakistan has conducted cross-border operations into Afghanistan, claiming the deaths of 331 militants and the destruction of numerous checkpoints and armoured vehicles. In retaliation, Afghan forces have targeted Pakistani military installations, prompting international calls for restraint and dialogue.

Pakistani Military Operations

According to Pakistan’s Information Minister Ataullah Tarar, the operation led to extensive militant losses and damage to infrastructure. The details are summarised below:

Operation Outcome Number
Militants killed 331
Militants injured 500+
Checkposts destroyed 104
Checkposts captured 22
Tanks and armoured vehicles destroyed 163
Afghan locations targeted by airstrikes 37

Afghan Civilian Casualties

The Afghan Taliban government reported civilian losses in several provinces following Pakistan’s incursions. Key incidents include:

Kandahar: Bomb attack on a temporary camp near the Durand Line killed three workers and injured seven.

Kunar Province (Asadabad): Shelling killed seven civilians and injured one.

Paktika Province: Recent attacks resulted in three fatalities and eight injuries.

In total, 13 Afghan civilians were confirmed dead due to the recent Pakistani strikes.

Political Statements and International Responses

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s spokesperson, Musharraf Zaidi, emphasised that these operations are defensive, not an act of war. He stated:

“Pakistan is taking measures to protect its territory and citizens from terrorism originating in Afghanistan. If the Taliban fail to dismantle militant bases on their soil, these operations will continue.”

Zaidi also urged adherence to the Doha Agreement, calling for an end to militant activity from Afghan territory against any nation.

The United States has signalled potential involvement, with former President Donald Trump suggesting possible intervention in the border clashes. Meanwhile, US State Department Undersecretary Allison Hooker expressed support for Pakistan’s right to self-defence.

Afghan Taliban Border Police spokesperson Abidullah Faruqi asserted that in response to Pakistan’s attacks, Afghan forces targeted Pakistani military sites at Torkham, maintaining that they are prepared to defend their nation with high morale.

The European Union has urged both countries to swiftly de-escalate tensions. EU foreign policy chief Kaya Kallas warned:

“The sudden spike in violence over the past 24 hours could have serious repercussions for regional stability.”

Analysts caution that continued escalation risks a broader humanitarian crisis along the volatile border, affecting thousands of civilians and potentially destabilising the wider region.
