DMP Orders No E-Rickshaws on Main Roads

Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) acting Commissioner, Md. Sarwar, has issued strict directives to ensure that battery-operated rickshaws do not operate on the city’s main thoroughfares. The measure aims to maintain smooth traffic flow, particularly during the peak hours of the holy month of Ramadan.

Speaking at a coordination meeting held on Tuesday (3 March) at the DMP headquarters conference room, the commissioner emphasised that the traffic police are actively monitoring the situation. “Regular eviction operations are underway against illegal encroachments on pavements and roads,” he said.

The meeting focused on several key areas, including security at banks and shopping malls, control of adulterated food items, price regulation, and overall traffic management in the metropolitan area during Ramadan.

Commissioner Sarwar highlighted that traffic congestion intensifies before iftar, making timely arrival a challenge for city residents. “To ensure people reach their destinations on time for iftar, senior DMP officers are leading traffic and crime personnel, supported by additional forces who are performing their duties tirelessly. In fact, during iftar, our officers even break their fast on the streets to ensure traffic movement is uninterrupted,” he explained.

He also noted that DMP units are actively working to prevent cybercrime and monitor social media for illegal activities. “With everyone’s cooperation, we hope Ramadan will conclude peacefully and harmoniously,” he added.

During the meeting, Additional Police Commissioner (Crime and Operations) S.N. Md. Nazrul Islam reported that there have been no major untoward incidents in Dhaka so far this Ramadan. “If the remaining days pass peacefully as well, we can celebrate Eid without disruption,” he said.

Mr. Nazrul also urged business leaders to bring their shops, markets, and establishments under CCTV surveillance. “This will not only enhance your personal safety but also facilitate the police in crime prevention. In any emergency, contact the nearest police station or call the national emergency service 999. We also encourage the use of DMP escort services for transporting cash or valuables ahead of Eid,” he added.

Other attendees included Additional Police Commissioner (Counter-Terrorism and Transnational Crime) Masud Karim, Additional Police Commissioner (DB) Shafiqul Islam, Additional Police Commissioner (Traffic) Anisur Rahman, DMP Joint Commissioners, Deputy Commissioners, other senior police officers, business representatives, and officials from various organisations.
