The serene hills of Sitakunda have been overshadowed by a harrowing act of violence following the death of eight-year-old Ira Moni. What began as a long-standing domestic dispute between neighbours culminated in a cold-blooded assassination attempt that has left the local community in mourning.
On Tuesday, 3 March, District Police Superintendent Mohammad Nazir Ahmed Khan disclosed during a press conference that the primary suspect, 45-year-old Babu Sheikh, had confessed to the crime. According to police investigations, the motive was rooted in a bitter, protracted feud between Sheikh and the victim’s father, Monirul Islam, a local rickshaw driver.
Sheikh, a resident of Gaibandha who lived as a tenant adjacent to the victim’s home in Masterpara, allegedly sought to settle a personal score by targeting his neighbour’s youngest child.
The sequence of events unfolded on Sunday morning when Sheikh reportedly lured the young girl away from her home with the promise of buying her chocolates. Trusting a familiar face, the victim followed him onto a bus from Kumira to Sitakunda.
The ordeal escalated when Sheikh forced the child to trek into the remote, rugged terrain of the Sitakunda Botanical Garden. Police reports indicate that:
The suspect attempted to sexually assault the child in the secluded hills.
When she threatened to reveal his actions, he used a sharp weapon to slit her throat, leaving her for dead in the wilderness.
In a remarkable display of resilience, the critically injured girl managed to stumble out of the dense woods toward a construction site. Labourers discovered her covered in blood and immediately raised the alarm. She was rushed to the Sitakunda Upazila Health Complex and later transferred to Chittagong Medical College Hospital. Despite the best efforts of medical professionals, she succumbed to her injuries on Tuesday morning.
