Two Lynched in Munshiganj Over Theft Allegation

Two young men were beaten to death by an enraged crowd in the early hours of Wednesday in an apparent case of mob justice in Munshiganj’s Louhajang area. Police have since arrested three individuals in connection with the incident and launched a wider operation to identify others involved.

The incident occurred at approximately 3:00 am on 4 March 2026 at the Satgharia Community Clinic in Haldia Union. According to police and local sources, the two men were allegedly caught attempting to steal electrical wiring from the clinic premises. Local residents reportedly detained them before a group of villagers gathered and began assaulting them.

The deceased have been identified as Sagar, 30, son of Farhad Mia of the Bedepalli area in Goalimandra, and Chanarul, 30, son of Md Shahidul. Both were residents of the local area.

Upon receiving information about the disturbance, officers from Louhajang Police Station rushed to the scene and rescued the injured men. They were taken to the Louhajang উপজেলা Health Complex, where the attending physician declared them dead.

Local residents claimed that suspicion had been mounting over recent theft incidents in the area. About two weeks earlier, goats worth several hundred thousand taka were reportedly stolen from a farm in the same union. Some villagers alleged that the two deceased men had been suspected in that earlier incident. When they were reportedly caught at the community clinic during the early morning hours, tensions quickly escalated, culminating in the fatal assault.

Officer-in-Charge Monir Hossain of Louhajang Police Station confirmed the incident and stated that three suspects had been arrested in connection with the killings. He added that police were conducting further raids in the locality to apprehend additional individuals involved in the attack.

Law enforcement authorities emphasised that taking the law into one’s own hands constitutes a serious criminal offence. Legal experts note that mob violence not only undermines the rule of law but also denies suspects due process and a fair investigation.

The tragic deaths have reignited concerns over incidents of vigilantism in rural areas, where rumours and suspicion can rapidly trigger collective violence. Human rights advocates have repeatedly called for stronger community awareness campaigns and prompt police intervention mechanisms to prevent such occurrences.
