In a tragic incident in Lohajang Upazila of Munshiganj, two men were beaten to death by locals over alleged theft, police confirmed. The episode occurred in the Satgharia area in the early hours of Tuesday, around 2:00 a.m.
The deceased have been identified as Md. Sagor (32) and Sanarul (34), residents of Goalimandra Bedepalli village. According to local sources, both men were accused of repeatedly stealing livestock, including cows and goats, as well as electrical wiring and other materials from both government and private establishments in the area.
Eyewitnesses reported that Sagor and Sanarul were attempting to steal electrical cables from Satgharia Community Clinic when a local poultry farmer caught them and held them for questioning. Soon after, other locals arrived, recovered the stolen materials, and began assaulting the men. Frustrated by a series of previous thefts, the residents tied the two men to a tree and subjected them to sustained beatings through the night until morning.
Police rescued the victims around 9:00 a.m. and transported them to the Lohajang Upazila Health Complex in critical condition. Fahmida Laskar, the Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, confirmed that the men were brought to the hospital by a van driver at approximately 10:30 a.m., but they had already succumbed to their injuries. Reports indicate multiple signs of physical trauma on their bodies.
A local resident, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “The entire community of Lohajang and Srinagar had grown weary of these repeated thefts. Although the incident was reported to the national emergency service (999) during the night, police did not intervene until the following morning, by which time their condition had deteriorated severely.”
Lohajang Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Monirul Islam, confirmed that no formal theft cases had been filed against the deceased, though they were known locally as professional thieves. Authorities have arrested three individuals in connection with the mob attack, and an investigation is ongoing.
