Academic Conspiracy Alleged in Brutal Slaying of University Professor

The tragic murder of Assistant Professor Asma Sadia Runa, the Head of the Social Welfare Department at the Islamic University (IU) in Kushtia, has taken a sinister turn. A formal murder case was filed on Wednesday night, alleging that the killing was not a random act of violence by a disgruntled subordinate, but a meticulously orchestrated conspiracy involving two of the victim’s faculty colleagues and a university official.

The Allegations: Corruption and Coercion

The case, filed by the victim’s husband, Muha Imtiaz Sultan, names four specific individuals. The primary accused is Khandaker Fazlur Rahman, a department employee who was found bleeding at the scene alongside the deceased. However, the charge sheet implicates Shyam Sundar Sarkar (former department chair) and Habibur Rahman (Assistant Professor) as the masterminds behind the plot. Biswajit Kumar Biswas, an Assistant Registrar recently transferred from the department, is also named as a key conspirator.

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the conflict began when Professor Sadia assumed the role of department head in September 2024. She reportedly demanded transparency regarding departmental funds and refused to sign off on irregular financial documents presented by Shyam Sundar and Biswajit. This stance against the alleged embezzlement of the departmental fund led to a protracted “psychological war.”

Key Figures Named in the Investigation

Name Role Case Status Alleged Motive
Khandaker Fazlur Rahman Office Assistant Accused No. 1 (In Custody) Disciplinary action & salary suspension
Shyam Sundar Sarkar Assistant Professor Named Co-conspirator Financial disputes/Audit refusal
Habibur Rahman Assistant Professor Named Co-conspirator Retaliation for staff transfer
Biswajit Kumar Biswas Assistant Registrar Named Co-conspirator Departmental fund irregularities

A Gruesome Crime Scene

The autopsy, conducted by a medical team at Kushtia General Hospital, revealed the sheer brutality of the attack. Dr Hossein Imam, the Resident Medical Officer, reported over 20 sharp-force injuries across Professor Sadia’s body. The fatal blow was a deep strike to the neck, though numerous defensive wounds on her hands and arms suggest a desperate struggle for her life.

While the primary suspect, Fazlur Rahman, is currently under police guard in the ICU, he has reportedly begun communicating via written notes. In a two-page statement, he admitted to the killing, citing deep resentment over his transfer to the Political Science department and the subsequent halting of his salary—actions he blamed entirely on Professor Sadia.

Campus in Mourning and Protests

The murder has sent shockwaves through the academic community. On Thursday, Professor Sadia was laid to rest at the Kushtia Municipal Graveyard following a funeral attended by the University Vice-Chancellor, local MPs, and thousands of grieving students.

The student body has since erupted in protest, issuing a nine-point demand to the university administration. These include the immediate public execution of the killers, the installation of comprehensive CCTV networks, and a total overhaul of the university’s financial and staff accountability systems.

As the police work to apprehend the accused faculty members, the university remains under a cloud of suspicion. While the accused teachers maintain their innocence, claiming they are being framed by a grieving family, the investigation continues to probe the intersection of academic administration and criminal intent.
