Messi Makes Historic Visit to White House

For the first time in history, the White House welcomed Lionel Messi’s presence on American soil—not just as a visitor, but as a champion of Major League Soccer (MLS). Inter Miami, the club for which Messi plays, secured their inaugural MLS Cup title this season, and the team, led by the Argentine superstar, was hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday in a ceremony that combined celebration, sportsmanship, and symbolic gifts.

Historic Visit and Ceremony

Messi, alongside Inter Miami co-owner Jorge Mas and the full squad, entered the East Room of the White House, where President Trump personally greeted the players. In a memorable gesture, Messi presented the President with a signed pink Inter Miami football, symbolising the club’s milestone achievement. Additional gifts included an Inter Miami jersey and a luxury watch, presented by Mas and head coach Javier Mascherano.

Since joining Inter Miami in July 2023, this was Messi’s first visit to the White House. His longtime rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, had attended a formal dinner at the presidential residence in November of the previous year.

Presidential Remarks

President Trump lauded the visiting champions:

“We are honouring truly talented individuals. I am proud to say something no previous American president could: Lionel Messi, welcome to the White House.”

He also shared a personal anecdote:

“My son asked me, ‘Dad, do you know who is coming today?’ I said, ‘No, a lot is happening.’ He said, ‘Messi.’”

Trump added that his son, a devoted Messi fan, considers the footballer “an extraordinary person” and expressed mutual admiration for Ronaldo as well:

“Cristiano is a gentleman. He is fantastic. And you are fantastic too, Leo.”

Reflecting on Messi’s achievement, Trump remarked:

“Leo, you came and you won. That is incredibly hard. The pressure on you was immense—more than almost anyone realises. But you succeeded, and that is remarkable.”

Squad and Celebration

The White House ceremony also included other Inter Miami stars such as Luis Suárez and Rodrigo De Paul. Following the formal presentation, President Trump invited the entire squad into the Oval Office, maintaining a longstanding tradition of hosting championship teams at the presidential residence.

Messi’s footsteps at the White House symbolise both the growing influence of soccer in the United States and the recognition of MLS as a competitive league attracting the world’s top talent. His visit marked a milestone for the sport in America, immortalising the day Messi and Inter Miami brought MLS glory to the White House.
