A shocking act of domestic violence unfolded in Jamalpur city on the early hours of Friday, 6 March, when a husband allegedly murdered his wife and attempted to burn her body. The incident occurred around 1:00 am in the Daripara neighbourhood, drawing swift intervention from neighbours, fire services, and police.
The deceased has been identified as Tahmina Akter Tania, a mother of two children. Her husband, Hossain Taifur, is a practising lawyer at the Supreme Court, according to family sources. Relatives described the couple’s marriage, which began 15 years ago, as fraught with ongoing familial disputes.
Tahmina’s younger brother, Tuhin Faisal, told reporters that the marriage had long been troubled by domestic conflict. “Taifur was reportedly struggling with substance abuse, and Tahmina frequently stayed at her father’s house for safety,” he said. On the evening of the incident, around 8:30 pm, Tahmina had returned to her husband’s home—a decision that preceded the violent attack.
According to the Jamalpur Police, the assault was carried out under the cover of darkness. Taifur allegedly used sharp weapons and other objects to attack Tahmina. Following the assault, he reportedly attempted to set her body alight on the bedroom bed. Neighbouring residents, alarmed by unusual noises and smoke, alerted emergency services.
Firefighters promptly arrived and extinguished the flames, while police recovered the body and secured the scene. With assistance from local witnesses, authorities successfully apprehended Taifur, who is now in custody pending further investigation.
Additional Superintendent of Police (Sadar Circle), Yahya Al Mamun, stated:
“This brutal attack stemmed from ongoing domestic disputes. The suspect used a sharp instrument and other items to assault his wife and attempted to set her on fire. The case is under active investigation, and all necessary legal actions will be taken.”
