Jennifer Lopez Reflects on Life After Third Divorce

Jennifer Lopez has revealed the profound struggles she faced following her 2014 divorce from Marc Anthony, describing it as a period when she was “about to give up on it all.” The separation marked her third divorce, leaving her to navigate single parenthood with her young twins, Max and Emme, now 18.

Speaking at her Up All Night Las Vegas residency at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace on Friday, 6 March, the 56-year-old singer admitted the months after the split were “actually a really tough time.”

“I was really about to give up on it all,” Lopez told her audience, as clips circulated widely on social media. “I mean, I was a single mother with two three-year-old twins.”

During this challenging period, Lopez found guidance from one of her mentors, the late self-help author Louise Hay. Her advice centred on persistence and resilience.

“She said to me, ‘Jennifer, you’re a dancer, right?’ I said, ‘Yes, I am.’ And she said, ‘When you’re learning a dance and you get the steps wrong, what do you do?’ I said, ‘I just keep going until I get the steps right.’ And she said, ‘That’s right Jennifer. Always keep dancing.’”

Lopez encouraged her audience to adopt the same approach in life. “I wish the same for each and every one of you, that no matter what life throws at you, you dance and you dance and you dance. Again and again and again,” she added.

The singer has previously reflected on her personal growth after her third divorce. During the second night of her residency in December, she said she “really started getting good at dancing” at a time when her life “was a mess.”

Despite the emotional difficulties of her split from Anthony, Lopez has acknowledged the positive impact he had on her confidence. In a 2018 interview with Sunday Today, she said, “While I was married to Marc, he really helped me with my confidence, and he saw where I suffered… He constantly reminded me, ‘You’re a great singer. Don’t ever let anybody tell you you’re not a great singer.’”

Years later, collaborating with Anthony on her Spanish-language album Por Primera Vez helped repair their friendship. On Spotify’s ¡Viva Latino! podcast in November 2017, Lopez explained that the experience “actually repaired certain parts of our relationship that had been fractured from our marriage and our divorce, and it made us friends again.”
