A tragic incident in Jhenaidah has left the city shaken after a young activist, Nirab Hossain, was fatally attacked at a local petrol station following a dispute over fuel. The incident occurred on Saturday evening (7 March) at the Taj Filling Station, situated near the central bus terminal.
Nirab Hossain, the son of Alimur Biswas from Badurgacha village in Barobazar, Kaliganj, was a well-known figure in the anti-discrimination student movement. Alongside his activism, he ran a small fast-food business near the Government Boys’ School in Jhenaidah town.
According to police reports and eyewitnesses, Nirab visited the Taj Filling Station to purchase petrol in a bottle. When the station attendants refused to supply fuel in this manner, he went to a nearby station. On his return, he noticed that another individual was being provided petrol at Taj Filling Station.
A verbal confrontation ensued between Nirab and the petrol station staff. The dispute escalated when three attendants allegedly attacked him with sticks, causing severe injuries. Bystanders rushed him to Jhenaidah Sadar Hospital, but the attending doctors declared him dead on arrival.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) of Jhenaidah Sadar Circle, Mahfuz Alam, confirmed the incident. He stated that three employees — Nasim Hossain, Ramizul, and Daud Hossain — have been detained by the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in connection with the assault.
Nirab’s body has been preserved at the hospital morgue pending autopsy. Authorities are preparing to file a formal case, and heightened security measures have been deployed in the area to prevent further unrest.
