Father and Son Arrested Over Theft From In-Laws

Police in Madan, Netrokona, have arrested a father and son for allegedly stealing gold jewellery from their in-laws’ home to fund a drug habit. The duo was apprehended late on Sunday, 8 March, at a rented apartment on Shyamoli Road in Madan municipality.

Details of the Arrest

The arrested individuals have been identified as Varun Chandra Karmakar, 45, and his son Tarun Chandra Karmakar, 22, residents of Gafargaon, Mymensingh. Police reports indicate that the family had a history of residing close to the victim’s home, making repeated access to the property easier.

According to authorities, Tarun had married the daughter of Amulya Chandra Das, a municipal resident and cleaner at the Upazila Executive Officer’s office, approximately a year and a half ago. Two months after the marriage, Tarun, along with his father, moved into the in-laws’ residence. Later, they rented a separate apartment on Shyamoli Road near the victim’s house. Varun Chandra Karmakar is employed at Matri Jewellers, a local jewellery store.

Approximately a week ago, the father-son duo reportedly stole gold jewellery worth nearly a lakh taka from the in-laws’ home to purchase drugs. On Sunday night, they allegedly attempted to return to the house to steal more jewellery when local residents intervened and informed police. The pair was subsequently taken into custody, and the stolen items were recovered. Both Varun and Tarun admitted to the theft during police questioning.

Statements from the Accused

Varun Chandra Karmakar reportedly stated, “The pressure to obtain money led me to take the jewellery and sell it. What we did was wrong.”

Tarun Chandra Karmakar added, “I used to take drugs, but I no longer use yaba. My father and I took the jewellery from my in-laws’ house a week ago. We know it was wrong.”

Victim’s Statement

Amulya Chandra Das, the victim, expressed his distress over the incident: “My son-in-law was addicted to drugs. After the marriage, he sold all my daughter’s jewellery. Last week, he and his father returned to steal more from my home. This betrayal has caused great distress to our family.”

Police Action

Madan Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Hasnat Zaman, confirmed the arrests: “The father and son have been taken into custody. Following a formal written complaint from the victims, appropriate legal proceedings will follow.”
