Wall Collapse Kills Two Young Girls

Two young girls tragically lost their lives after a wall collapsed on them while they were playing in a residential area of the capital on Wednesday afternoon. The incident occurred in North Badda, causing shock and grief among residents of the neighbourhood.

According to family members and hospital authorities, the victims were identified as Ayesha Moni, aged nine, and Nusrat Akter, aged six. Both children sustained severe injuries when a boundary wall suddenly collapsed beside a road where they had been playing with other children.

The accident took place at approximately 11:30 in the morning in Lane 10 of the North-Eastern Badda area. Local residents rushed to the scene immediately after hearing a loud crash and finding the two girls trapped beneath the debris. With the help of neighbours, the injured children were quickly rescued and transported to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

Doctors on duty examined the girls shortly after their arrival, which was reported to be around 12:45 in the afternoon. Unfortunately, both were declared dead due to the severity of their injuries.

Iqbal, the father of Ayesha Moni, described the devastating moment when the accident occurred. He said that his daughter and Nusrat had been playing by the roadside near their residence when the wall of a nearby house suddenly collapsed without warning. The falling structure trapped the two children underneath, leaving them critically injured.

Both families had been living in rented accommodation in the North-Eastern Badda area. According to relatives, Ayesha Moni’s family originally comes from the Yafedi locality of Barura in Cumilla District. Nusrat Akter’s father, Sharif Mia, also resides in the same neighbourhood with his family.

Officials from the police outpost at Dhaka Medical College Hospital confirmed that the bodies were placed in the hospital morgue after the doctors pronounced them dead. The incident has been formally reported to the local police station, and authorities have begun preliminary inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the collapse.

Local residents expressed deep concern over the safety of ageing or poorly maintained structures in densely populated urban neighbourhoods. Many noted that boundary walls and buildings constructed without proper maintenance or structural inspection can pose serious risks, particularly in areas where children frequently play outdoors.

Authorities are expected to investigate whether structural weakness, poor construction, or lack of maintenance contributed to the collapse. Urban planners and safety experts frequently warn that rapid expansion in densely populated city districts increases the likelihood of such incidents unless regular inspections and strict building safety standards are enforced.

The deaths of the two children have left the community in mourning, with neighbours describing the girls as cheerful and active members of the neighbourhood who were often seen playing together. Residents have urged local authorities to conduct inspections of nearby structures to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
