In the early hours of Wednesday, 11 March, a young woman was found brutally murdered inside her home in the hilly area of Ukhiya, Cox’s Bazar, as she prepared the pre-dawn meal for Ramadan.
The victim, 25-year-old Jazida Akter, was the wife of Mohammad Shafiqul Islam, a daily wage labourer from the Palongkhali Union’s Mosarkhola area. Reports indicate that Shafiqul was away on work in Bandarban at the time of the incident, having left a few days after the beginning of Ramadan.
According to local police, the gruesome discovery was made by the victim’s father-in-law, Nurul Bashar, who recounted the shocking scene. “My son and his wife lived a little distance from us. My wife has been unwell since before Ramadan. Every day during Ramadan, Jazida would prepare the pre-dawn meal. This morning, when she did not call us as usual, I went to check. When I switched on the light, I saw her lying on the floor, covered in blood,” he said.
Meanwhile, Jazida’s father, Nurul Islam, claimed that his daughter and Shafiqul were married socially rather than formally. He alleged that tensions arose within a few years of their union, with conflicts not only involving her husband but also her in-laws. “My daughter suffered physical abuse from both her husband and her in-laws. She has been murdered,” he stated.
The body of Jazida Akter was sent to Cox’s Bazar District Hospital for a post-mortem examination. Police have launched an investigation to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing and to identify those responsible.
The Officer-in-Charge of Ukhiya Police, Mohammad Nasir Uddin, confirmed that a police team visited the scene after receiving the report. “The woman was found deceased on the floor of the house, covered in blood. Investigations are underway,” he said.
