Jamalpur Court Hands Death Sentences in Gang Rape Case

In a landmark judgment, the Jamalpur Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-1 sentenced three men to death and acquitted one in connection with the gang rape of a housewife. The ruling was delivered on Wednesday, 11 March, by Judge Md. Abdur Rahim, emphasising the court’s commitment to upholding justice in cases of sexual violence.

Convicted and Acquitted Individuals

Name Father’s Name Village Upazila District Verdict
Md. Faruk Hossain Azizul Haq Pakulya Madhyapara Sadar Jamalpur Death Sentence
Munsur Ali Ali Akbar Pakulya Madhyapara Sadar Jamalpur Death Sentence
Ferdous Hossain Shafiqul Islam Pakulya Madhyapara Sadar Jamalpur Death Sentence
Zahidul Islam Jamal Uddin Pakulya Madhyapara Sadar Jamalpur Acquitted

According to the court, the incident occurred on the night of 19 July 2023 at Mesherchora Mor in Sadar Upazila. The victim and her husband had visited a local egg shop to recover outstanding payments. During the encounter, her husband was tied to a tree, and she was abducted and gang-raped by several individuals. The following day, the victim lodged a formal complaint with Jamalpur Sadar Police Station, prompting a full investigation.

After recording testimonies from four key witnesses, the court delivered its verdict in the absence of the accused. Public Prosecutor Advocate Fazlul Haq confirmed that the three men were found guilty under Section 9(3)/7 of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, and the court ordered their execution. Zahidul Islam, however, was acquitted due to lack of evidence against him.

The victim’s family expressed satisfaction with the judgment, describing it as fair and just. Legal experts have hailed the ruling as a strong signal against sexual violence in Bangladesh, reinforcing the principle of zero tolerance by both law enforcement authorities and the judiciary.

This verdict is seen not only as retribution for the victims but also as a societal warning, demonstrating the judiciary’s resolve to prevent sexual abuse against women and children. By imposing the death penalty, the court has underscored the seriousness with which such crimes are treated and emphasised the urgent need for heightened awareness and protective measures at community levels.

The case has drawn nationwide attention, illustrating the continuing challenges in safeguarding vulnerable populations and the critical role of prompt legal action in delivering justice.
