13 Ships Attacked in Middle East Conflict: UKMTO

Since the commencement of the joint United States–Israeli operations in Iran, a total of 13 commercial vessels have reportedly been targeted in the Middle East, according to the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO). The organisation, which monitors maritime safety and trade routes, has also recorded four additional suspicious incidents, bringing the total number of reported events in the region to seventeen. These incidents span the Arabian Sea, the Strait of Hormuz, and the Gulf of Oman, all critical arteries for global maritime trade.

UKMTO stated that on Wednesday morning, three commercial vessels were damaged by projectile strikes of unknown origin, marking the latest escalation in a series of maritime attacks. One of the affected ships, located north of the Omani coast, had its crew forced to evacuate for safety reasons. The vessels involved were primarily carrying oil and raw materials, underscoring the potential threat to regional and global supply chains.

Maritime security experts have highlighted that such attacks are likely planned and coordinated, posing significant risks not only to the ships and their crews but also to the wider international trading system. The Strait of Hormuz alone is a crucial passage through which a substantial portion of the world’s oil supply is transported annually. Any disruption in this corridor can have immediate repercussions on global energy prices and trade logistics.

The UKMTO has issued heightened alerts for all commercial ships operating in these waters, advising enhanced vigilance and avoidance of high-risk areas where feasible. Shipping companies have also been encouraged to increase onboard security measures and maintain constant communication with maritime authorities.

The following table summarises the recent recorded incidents:

Date Location Vessels Affected Incident Type Damage/Impact
2026-03-03 Arabian Sea 4 Unknown projectile Minor damage, crew safe
2026-03-05 Strait of Hormuz 5 Projectile/armed attack Moderate damage, crew safe
2026-03-08 Gulf of Oman 4 Unknown projectile Significant damage, crew safe
2026-03-11 North Omani Coast 3 Projectile strike Major damage, crew evacuated

Analysts have warned that the ongoing maritime violence could exacerbate tensions in the region and disrupt critical shipping lanes that handle billions of dollars’ worth of commodities annually. The UKMTO continues to coordinate with local and international naval authorities to monitor the situation closely and mitigate further risks to commercial shipping.

As the conflict persists, shipping firms and crews navigating these waters are being urged to maintain extreme caution, adhere to recommended maritime safety protocols, and prepare for potential emergency evacuations.
