Measures Planned for Returning Migrant Workers

In the wake of escalating conflict in Iran, the Ministry of Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment has announced that measures will be taken to ensure employment and welfare support for Bangladeshi migrant workers who may return home. Nurul Haque Nur, the State Minister for Expatriates’ Welfare and Overseas Employment, stated that the Prime Minister has instructed the ministry to provide appropriate support, including employment opportunities, compensation, and welfare assistance, should the situation worsen.

Speaking at an Iftar reception organised by the Narayanganj People’s Rights Council, the State Minister emphasised the government’s commitment to safeguarding the interests of its citizens abroad. “If our workers are compelled to return due to external conflicts, the ministry will ensure that they are not left without support. We have prepared plans for their immediate employment and welfare,” he said.

Minister Nur further highlighted the government’s broader development agenda, noting that the Prime Minister is working with the dedication and inspiration reminiscent of Ziaur Rahman’s legacy. He called upon political parties and civil society to collaborate with the government, stressing that collective effort will allow Bangladesh to achieve a stable developmental trajectory within the next five years. “This government is not the adversary of anyone; it is the government of all citizens,” he added.

The event was attended by a wide range of dignitaries, including local MP Abul Kalam, district BNP convener Professor Mamun Mahmud, and President of the Narayanganj branch of the People’s Rights Council, Engineer Nahid Hossain, among others.

To ensure effective support for returning expatriates, the ministry has outlined a structured plan, summarised below:

Step Description Objective
Monitoring & Data Collection Identify and track workers in conflict-affected regions Ensure timely assistance and risk assessment
Safe Repatriation Arrange secure travel via air or land Reduce exposure to conflict and ensure safe return
Employment Placement Offer jobs in SMEs and public sector programmes Facilitate economic reintegration and stability
Welfare & Compensation Financial and social support for affected workers Provide social security and immediate relief

The State Minister concluded that such measures would bolster both the confidence of migrant workers and the national economy, particularly during times of international crises. By proactively preparing for contingencies, the government aims to provide a safety net for its expatriates while strengthening Bangladesh’s overseas employment framework.
