Extrajudicial Killings, Enforced Disappearances Nearly Zero: Minister

Bangladesh has successfully reduced extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances to near-zero levels, the Law Minister, Md. Asaduzzaman, stated on Wednesday.

Speaking at an Iftar reception organised by the Dhaka University LLM Lawyers’ Association (DULA) at the Dhaka Club, the minister emphasised the government’s ongoing commitment to uphold human rights and strengthen the rule of law.

“Over recent years, Bangladesh has made significant progress in human rights indicators,” the minister said. “Extrajudicial killings have been brought down to nearly zero. Enforced disappearances, once a pressing concern, are also at a negligible level. Furthermore, the culture of false or politically motivated litigation has been substantially curtailed. These achievements reflect our commitment to a fair and transparent justice system.”

Looking ahead, the minister highlighted the commencement of the 13th National Parliament’s first session, beginning Thursday. “We are returning to the main road of democracy. It is our solemn responsibility to safeguard human rights, ensure access to justice, and uphold the rule of law for all citizens. May Allah grant us the ability to fulfil this responsibility and protect the lives and property of the Bangladeshi people,” he added. He also expressed hope that the nation’s citizens would serve as active partners in achieving the country’s shared democratic aspirations.

The event was presided over by DULA President Advocate Sheikh Ali Ahmed Khokon and coordinated under the supervision of Deputy Attorney General Md. Shafiqul Islam. The programme was hosted by DULA Secretary Advocate Kazi Muhammad Zainal Abedin. Members of Dhaka University LLM Lawyers’ Association attended in large numbers, contributing to a dialogue on legal reform, human rights, and accountability.

The minister’s remarks underscored the government’s ongoing efforts to foster a justice system that is transparent, accountable, and aligned with international human rights standards. The gathering also provided a platform for senior legal professionals to reiterate the importance of safeguarding democratic institutions and ensuring the protection of citizens’ rights in Bangladesh.
