A political controversy has erupted in Char Kalkini Union, No. 1, Komolnagar Upazila, Lakshmipur, after rice distributed under the Vulnerable Group Feeding (VGF) programme for Eid was found to bear a slogan featuring the name of former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.
The incident came to light on Thursday morning (12 March) during a distribution session at the Union Parishad office, where rice was being handed out to impoverished and vulnerable families in the area.
According to government allocations, 4,000 destitute families in Char Kalkini Union were each to receive 10 kilograms of rice, amounting to a total of 40,000 kilograms. However, recipients and officials were surprised to see that some of the rice sacks carried the inscription:
“Sheikh Hasina’s Bangladesh: Hunger Will Be Eradicated.”
The presence of such political messaging on government relief rice, particularly following a recent change in political leadership, generated mixed reactions among local residents and beneficiaries. Officials overseeing the distribution, including government monitors and the Union Parishad chairman, found themselves in an awkward position, needing to manage tensions while continuing the relief operation. Local discussions and debates quickly spread regarding the appropriateness of political slogans on essential food aid.
Nishad Jahan, the Upazila Food Depot Inspector, explained the situation:
“When rice is supplied from the warehouse, instructions are given to remove or paint over any previous political slogans or names. Nonetheless, it is possible that a few sacks may inadvertently retain the old inscriptions. We regret such unintended errors and apologise for the oversight.”
Meanwhile, Komolnagar Upazila Executive Officer (UNO) Rahat Uz-Zaman confirmed that the matter is being taken seriously:
“We are reviewing the issue closely. Discussions with the food department and the OC-LSD are underway to ensure that appropriate corrective measures are implemented.”
In an effort to prevent further controversy, authorities have already initiated the removal or covering of political inscriptions from the remaining rice sacks at the distribution centre.
The following table summarises the VGF rice allocation for Char Kalkini Union:
| Union | Allocated Families | Rice per Family (kg) | Total Rice Allocated (kg) | Remarks |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Char Kalkini No.1 | 4,000 | 10 | 40,000 | Some sacks bore political slogans |
Local sources reported that while most beneficiaries accepted the rice without issue, the presence of the slogan sparked discussions over the neutrality of government relief programmes. Union Parishad and food department officials have pledged stricter oversight in the future to ensure that VGF allocations remain free from political content.
This incident has reignited public debate about the transparency and impartiality of state-run relief operations, highlighting the sensitivities involved when political messaging intersects with essential social welfare programmes.
