Young Man Killed by Lightning in Durgapur

NETRAKONA — A tragic incident struck Durgapur Upazila on Friday morning (13 March) when a 25-year-old man, Akash Mia, lost his life after being struck by lightning. The unfortunate event occurred in Almupur village of Chandigarh Union, leaving the local community in shock. Akash Mia was the son of Mojibur Rahman, a resident of the same village, according to confirmation by local Union Parishad member Khokon Mia.

Incident Details

Akash Mia, a professional mason by trade, had left his home early in the morning to attend to his work. Witnesses reported that as he was walking near a paddy field, a sudden downpour accompanied by thunder and lightning began. Locals later discovered him lying motionless beside the field and immediately alerted emergency services.

He was swiftly transported to the Durgapur Upazila Health Complex. However, Dr Tanzirul Islam Raihan, the attending physician, confirmed that Akash had succumbed to the lightning strike before any medical intervention could be effective. Dr Raihan stated, “Upon arrival, the signs were consistent with death caused by electrocution from a lightning strike. Examination confirmed there were no vital signs.”

OC Md Kamrul Hasan of Durgapur Police Station confirmed that the authorities had been informed and visited the scene. He emphasised that such incidents, though rare, are highly dangerous during sudden weather changes and urged residents to exercise caution during thunderstorms.
