Iran Vows Revenge for Naval Ship Attack

Iran has declared it will take decisive action following a devastating assault on its naval frigate, IRIS Dena, in the Indian Ocean. The announcement came from the country’s military chief, Major General Amir Hatami, during a televised statement on Saturday, 14 March. He emphasised that more than a hundred sailors lost their lives during what was meant to be a peaceful mission.

Attack on IRIS Dena

Speaking to the state-run IRNA News Agency, Major General Hatami described the attack as “unprovoked and brutal.”

“The crew of IRIS Dena were returning to Iran after completing a peaceful mission when the ship was attacked without any provocation, resulting in the deaths of more than a hundred sailors,” Hatami said.
“We will deliver an appropriate response to this act of aggression.”

He added that the fallen sailors would be remembered as enduring symbols of patriotism, bravery, and self-sacrifice within the history of the Iranian Navy. Hatami reaffirmed that Iran’s armed forces remain fully committed to defending the nation’s maritime boundaries and strengthening naval capabilities.

Context and Background

The incident occurred shortly after the conclusion of the international naval exercise Milan 2026, held on 18 February in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India. Over 70 countries participated, deploying warships and personnel to the exercise. Iran had sent IRIS Dena to represent its naval forces during the drills.

On the return voyage through the Indian Ocean, near the Sri Lankan coast, the vessel was reportedly struck by a torpedo from a U.S. Navy unit. Of the 104 crew members aboard, 94 were killed. The Sri Lankan Navy recovered 84 bodies, which were repatriated to Tehran on Friday.

Iran’s Response

Major General Hatami stated that Iran would respond firmly but cautiously. He described the fallen sailors as national heroes and stressed that the Iranian Navy remains vigilant and prepared to defend national waters.

“This tragedy will not weaken us,” Hatami said.
“The Iranian Navy will continue to protect the country’s sovereignty, and the bravery of the fallen will inspire our resolve.”

The incident has intensified regional tensions, raising concerns about maritime security in the Indian Ocean and the risk of further military confrontation between major powers. It also underscores the strategic importance of naval exercises like Milan 2026 and the vulnerability of military vessels during post-exercise transits.
