Sudden Storm Claims Boat Owner’s Life in Kurigram

A tragic accident occurred in Kurigram’s Chilmarie area on Saturday evening when a sudden thunderstorm struck the region, resulting in the death of a local boat owner and the disappearance of another. The deceased has been identified as Mintu Mia, aged 38, while 32-year-old Farid Hossain remains missing after falling into the Brahmaputra River.

According to local sources, the incident happened at around 8:30 PM in Gazirpara, part of the Koraibarishal Union of Chilmarie Upazila. Residents reported that the sky darkened abruptly and violent winds accompanied a sudden thunderstorm, locally known as Kalbaisakhi. Both Mintu Mia and Farid Hossain had gone to the riverbank to check on their boats moored at the Brahmaputra ghats when disaster struck.

The storm’s intensity caused the ropes securing a moored boat to snap. The boat was violently thrown against Mintu Mia, fatally injuring him on the spot. Meanwhile, Farid Hossain was swept into the river and has not yet been found. Local eyewitnesses described the scene as chaotic, with strong winds and turbulent water making rescue efforts extremely difficult.

The following table summarises key details of the incident:

Name Age Role Status Incident Details
Mintu Mia 38 Boat Owner Deceased Hit by drifting boat during thunderstorm
Farid Hossain 32 Boat Owner Missing Swept into Brahmaputra River
Location Gazirpara, Koraibarishal Union, Chilmarie Upazila
Time 8:30 PM, Saturday

Local Union Parishad member Angur Mia confirmed the incident, expressing condolences to the family. Mintu Mia’s burial took place on Sunday morning at approximately 9:00 AM. Meanwhile, relatives and local residents are continuing their search for Farid Hossain in the Brahmaputra River.

Chilmarie Model Police Station’s duty officer, Assistant Sub-Inspector Asma Akter, stated that she had not yet received official reports and that further details would be provided following an inquiry. Authorities have urged locals to exercise caution and avoid riverbanks during sudden storms, noting that Kalbaisakhi events can escalate rapidly and pose significant dangers.

This tragic incident highlights the unpredictability of seasonal storms in northern Bangladesh and the pressing need for increased safety measures for riverside communities.
