BNP Leader Arrested for Attempted Assault in Raipur

In a disturbing incident in Raipur, Lakshmipur, police have arrested a local political leader for attempting to sexually assault a schoolgirl. The accused, Shukun Miazi, 60, is the son of the late Nur Islam Miazi and currently serves as the president of Ward 6 of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP).

According to police reports, the incident occurred on Sunday at approximately 11 a.m. The victim, a schoolgirl, had gone to a shop in front of her house to collect flatbreads when Shukun Miazi allegedly cornered her in a secluded area and attempted to commit the assault. The child immediately informed her family, prompting her aunt to file a formal complaint with local authorities later that evening, seeking justice.

Locals reportedly detained Shukun Miazi around 10 p.m. and informed the police, who took him into custody. The police confirmed that an investigation into the attempted assault and sexual harassment is ongoing.

Speaking after his arrest, Shukun Miazi denied the allegations. He claimed that the girl’s family was poor and that he had merely checked on her ahead of Eid, assuring her that he had a festive outfit for her. He stated:

“I did not commit any crime. Some people from the neighbourhood conspired against me and influenced the family to file a false case.”

Shahin Mia, Officer-in-Charge of Raipur Police Station, confirmed that a case has been filed by the child’s aunt. He added that the accused would be presented in court on Monday morning and, if remanded, sent to jail.

This arrest highlights ongoing concerns over the safety of children in rural areas, particularly regarding access to justice and prompt police intervention. The swift action by local residents, coupled with police response, has been noted as critical in preventing further harm.
