Police Officer’s Mother Found Murdered in Khulna

The throat-slit body of an elderly woman, identified as the mother of a police officer, has been recovered in Paikgacha Upazila of Khulna, prompting a police investigation into what authorities suspect to be a brutal homicide.

The deceased, Bharati Mondal, was the mother of Sub-Inspector (SI) Chinmoy Mondal, who is currently serving at Shoronkhola Police Station in Bagerhat district. Her body was discovered on Sunday morning in a fish enclosure adjacent to her home in Putulakhali village under Lata Union of Paikgacha Upazila.

According to local residents, the murder is believed to have occurred late on Saturday night. Unknown assailants allegedly slit Bharati Mondal’s throat before abandoning her body inside a nearby fish enclosure, commonly known as a “gher” in the coastal districts of south-western Bangladesh.

Villagers reported that the elderly woman lived in the locality and was known among neighbours as a quiet resident who spent most of her time at home. Her family members had reportedly not noticed anything unusual on the evening before the incident.

The crime came to light early on Sunday morning when neighbours visited the house and realised that Bharati Mondal was missing. Concerned residents began searching the surrounding area, including nearby fields and fish enclosures. After some time, they spotted her body lying inside a gher close to the house. The discovery caused alarm among locals, who immediately informed the police.

Officers from Paikgacha Police Station arrived at the scene shortly afterwards. The body bore visible signs of a violent attack, particularly a deep cut to the throat, which strongly suggested homicide. Police prepared an inquest report at the scene before sending the body for further examination.

Later in the afternoon, the body was transported to the morgue of Khulna Medical College Hospital for post-mortem examination. Authorities hope the autopsy will provide additional clues regarding the exact cause and time of death, as well as possible forensic evidence that could help identify the perpetrators.

The incident has generated considerable concern in the local community, as violent crimes of this nature are relatively rare in the rural areas of Paikgacha. Residents have called for a swift investigation and the arrest of those responsible.

Police officials confirmed that they are actively working to uncover the motive behind the killing. Investigators are examining several possibilities, including personal disputes, robbery, or other underlying conflicts, although no definitive motive has yet been established.

Golam Kibria, Officer-in-Charge of Paikgacha Police Station, stated that an inquest report had already been completed and that law enforcement authorities were pursuing all possible leads. He added that the body had been sent to Khulna Medical College Hospital for autopsy and that efforts were underway to identify the perpetrators and bring them to justice.
