In a major law enforcement breakthrough, Chittagong Metropolitan Police have arrested Md. Alvin, the 31-year-old nephew of notorious militant Bor Sajjad, in a special operation conducted by Bayezid Bostami Police Station. Alvin is a key suspect in the high-profile murder case of Sarwar Hossain Sakib, alias Babla, which had sent shockwaves across the city.
The arrest took place on Saturday, 14 March, in West Faridapara, Chandgaon Thana, following a carefully coordinated police operation. He was subsequently produced before the court on Sunday, 15 March.
The murder of Sarwar Hossain Sakib occurred on 5 November last year in the Chawlitoli area near Khandakarpara Mosque, under Bayezid Bostami jurisdiction. On that evening, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) candidate for Chittagong-8, Alhaj Ershad Ullah, was conducting a public outreach campaign with party workers distributing leaflets.
During the campaign, at approximately 5:40 p.m., a group of armed assailants, allegedly acting under the direction and planning of top militant Md. Sajjad, targeted Babla with indiscriminate gunfire. The attack resulted in his immediate death at the scene. Following the incident, a formal murder case was lodged at Bayezid Bostami Police Station.
Police officials have linked Md. Alvin to a range of criminal activities across Bayezid Bostami, Chandgaon, and Panchlaish. According to Assistant Commissioner Aminur Rashid of Chittagong Metropolitan Police, Alvin was involved in systematic extortion from construction sites and businesses under the guise of coercion. He is also alleged to have connections to multiple violent incidents, including shootings and assaults, in various parts of Chittagong.
Alvin’s apprehension is considered a significant step in dismantling the network led by his uncle, Bor Sajjad, which has long terrorised the local population through organised crime, extortion, and acts of targeted violence.

Police investigations are ongoing to uncover the full extent of Alvin’s criminal network and to apprehend any other individuals involved in organised attacks and extortion activities. Authorities have assured the public that sustained operations are underway to restore security and combat politically motivated violence in the city.
The arrest of Md. Alvin underscores the continued vigilance of Chittagong law enforcement agencies in tackling organised crime and militancy, signalling a strong message to criminal elements operating under political and militant patronage.
