Pakistan Cricket Faces “Zimbabwe Moment”: Shehzad Criticises Leadership

Following Pakistan’s narrow 2–1 defeat to Bangladesh in the recent ODI series, former national batter Ahmed Shehzad has launched a scathing critique of the team’s leadership and management. He warned that Pakistan cricket is descending to a worrying low, and urgent corrective action is needed.

After the third ODI in Dhaka ended with an 11-run loss, Shehzad addressed his concerns directly on his YouTube channel. He accused captain Shaheen Shah Afridi and head coach Mike Hesson of deflecting blame instead of addressing the underlying issues.

“Even after the embarrassing T20 World Cup performance, no meaningful changes were made,” Shehzad said. “Suddenly, young players were introduced without a proper plan. Now, after losing this series, the excuse is youth in the XI. Unless mistakes are acknowledged, progress is impossible.”

Shehzad also questioned the absence of senior players Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman. Conflicting explanations have emerged: Afridi and Hesson stated they were rested, while chief selector Aaqib Javed claimed both sustained injuries during the T20 World Cup.

He further criticised tactical decisions, particularly Afridi’s choice to field after winning the toss in the third ODI.

“Why bowl first on a good pitch? Bat first, set a target, and then bowl under lights. When senior players behave this way, how can you expect the youngsters to perform?”

This series loss came on the heels of Pakistan’s early exit from the T20 World Cup Super Eight stage, marking a continuation of disappointing results in ICC events. Pakistan has now failed to reach the semifinals in four consecutive ICC tournaments.

Shehzad dismissed management claims that victories against Australia and South Africa indicated progress, noting that both teams did not field full-strength squads.

“If Pakistan cricket wanted to fix its issues, action should have been taken long ago,” he added.

His sharpest critique hit at the nation’s cricketing image:

“You are sliding to associate-level standards. People now see Pakistan like Zimbabwe. And then you talk about run rates as the reason for World Cup exits. Have some shame.”
