Police in Saidpur have recovered the hanging body of a young housewife, prompting a formal investigation into whether the death was a suicide or the result of foul play. The deceased, identified as Shamima Akhtar, was the wife of Sohag, a former president of the local unit of Bangladesh Chhatra League.
The incident came to light on Tuesday morning (17 March) at a residence in the Golahat railway quarters, a densely populated residential area in Saidpur. According to local residents, tensions had reportedly been escalating within the household for several months, with frequent arguments between the couple.
Neighbours alleged that disputes between Sohag and his wife had become increasingly regular since August 2024. On the night prior to the recovery, an argument is believed to have occurred, after which the door to their room was found locked from the inside. When there was no response the following morning, concerned individuals forced entry into the room, where Shamima Akhtar was discovered hanging.
Sources at the Saidpur 100-Bed Hospital confirmed that the body was brought in at approximately 12:10 p.m. on Tuesday. A woman identified as Moni Akhtar, reportedly a relative of Sohag, transported the deceased to the hospital, where doctors declared her dead on arrival.
Law enforcement officials have since taken custody of the body. Officer-in-Charge RezauI Karim Reza of Saidpur Police Station stated that the case is currently under investigation. He noted that the body has been sent to the Nilphamari morgue for a post-mortem examination, which will be crucial in determining the exact cause of death.
Authorities have not ruled out any possibilities at this stage. While initial observations suggest a case of hanging, it remains unclear whether the incident was a suicide or a homicide staged to appear as one. Police have indicated that they will examine all relevant evidence, including forensic findings, witness statements, and the domestic history of the couple.
Local residents have called for a thorough and impartial investigation, citing the reported history of domestic disputes as a matter of concern. Community members expressed unease over the circumstances, emphasising the need for clarity and justice.
