A tragic incident unfolded on the night of Tuesday, 17 March, in South Hiron village, Kotalipara Upazila, Gopalganj, where a widow lost her home after her drug-addicted son set it ablaze. The house, constructed of wood and corrugated tin, was reduced to ashes within moments, leaving the mother homeless and devastated.
According to local sources, Shahidul Islam, 25, son of the late Shah Alam Sheikh, has been struggling with drug addiction for several years. On the night of the incident, he demanded money from his mother, Henara Begum, to purchase drugs. When she was unable to provide the funds, Shahidul reportedly forced her out of the house and set the residence on fire before fleeing the scene. Neighbours rushed to extinguish the flames, but the fire consumed the house almost instantly.
Henara Begum recounted her ordeal, saying, “My son has been addicted to drugs for a long time. He constantly asks me for money, and if I fail to give it, he resorts to violence. On that night, I could not provide the money, and he drove me out and set our home on fire. I do not know how I will survive now. My elder son, Oliullah, has been missing in India for ten years due to work, and six months ago, my husband died in a road accident in Barisal. My younger son’s addiction has left me utterly helpless.”
She added with tears, “Even the little shelter I had—the roof over my head—is now burnt to ashes. I have no desire to live anymore. How am I supposed to endure such sorrow?”
Neighbours expressed shock and concern over Shahidul’s actions. Jamir Ali, a local resident, said, “Shahidul has been addicted for years. If he does not get money for drugs, he beats his mother. Last night, when he could not obtain money, he set the house on fire. We tried to intervene, but the house was already destroyed. We hope no family ever faces such tragedy caused by a drug-addicted child.”
