In a harrowing incident in Daulatpur, Kushtia, a two-and-a-half-year-old girl, Nuzayfa Akter, was brutally killed by her aunt, Kalpana Akter, who allegedly tried to disguise the act as a suicide. Police have arrested the accused following the shocking murder.
The tragic event occurred on Wednesday (18 March) in the South Darer Para village of Daulatpur Upazila. Nuzayfa was the daughter of Abdur Rahman, a resident of the village.
According to police reports, Kalpana Akter, driven by long-standing family disputes with Nuzayfa’s mother, Priya Khatun, lured the child to a nearby mahogany plantation. There, she allegedly strangled Nuzayfa using her own scarf, and subsequently hung the toddler’s body from a tree in an attempt to make the death appear as a suicide.
Local residents discovered the child hanging in the plantation at approximately 4:00 pm. They immediately alerted authorities, and Nuzayfa was rushed to a local hospital, where doctors pronounced her dead on arrival.

Officer-in-Charge Arifur Rahman of Daulatpur Police Station confirmed that the child’s body has been sent to Kushtia General Hospital morgue for a post-mortem examination. Kalpana Akter has confessed to the crime during preliminary questioning. Her husband was also questioned during the investigation.
According to Tawhidul Hasan Tuhin, Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer, Nuzayfa had already passed away before being brought to the hospital.
Authorities are taking legal measures against the accused, and the investigation is ongoing to determine the full circumstances and any additional involvement. Police have emphasised the importance of community vigilance in reporting suspicious activity, which in this case led to the prompt arrest of the perpetrator.
The incident has sent shockwaves through the Kushtia district, highlighting the vulnerability of children within familial disputes and the urgent need for safeguarding measures in domestic settings.
