US President Donald Trump has issued a stark warning to Iran, declaring that any further attacks on Qatar could trigger a devastating strike on Iran’s crucial South Pars gas field. The warning was posted on his social media platform, Truth Social, in a detailed statement addressing escalating tensions in the Gulf region.
Trump stated that the United States had no prior knowledge of an Israeli strike on the South Pars gas field. He claimed that Israel had acted “in anger,” causing damage to only a “small portion” of the facility compared to its entirety. According to Trump, Iran’s retaliatory attack on Qatar’s Ras Laffan LNG facility was “unjustified and irrational,” carried out without understanding the full facts.
Describing South Pars as “extremely important and valuable,” Trump emphasized that Israel would not strike the field again. However, he directly warned Tehran that should it attack Qatar again, the United States would destroy the gas field with a level of force “unprecedented and unimaginable” to Iran. Trump added, “I do not wish to authorise destruction on this scale due to its long-term negative consequences, but should Qatar’s LNG facilities be attacked again, I would not hesitate for a moment.”
Earlier reports from QatarEnergy indicated that Iran’s missile strikes on the Ras Laffan Industrial City resulted in significant fires and damage to critical infrastructure. Fortunately, the facility had been evacuated hours before the attack. The Iranian government had previously stated that in response to any strikes on its gas fields, it would target four facilities within the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region, including Qatar’s LNG site.
The following table summarises key details of the recent events:
| Aspect | Details |
|---|---|
| Location of attack | Ras Laffan Industrial City, Qatar |
| Type of attack | Missile strike |
| Damage | Extensive fires, infrastructure damage |
| Evacuation | Facility evacuated prior to strike |
| US position | Threatened South Pars destruction if attacks continue |
| Iran’s declared retaliation | Targeted four GCC facilities in response |
Experts warn that rising tensions over the Gulf’s energy infrastructure could have far-reaching consequences for global energy markets and regional security. South Pars, one of the world’s largest natural gas fields, is of strategic significance not only to Iran but also to the international energy supply chain.
The unfolding crisis has drawn global attention, highlighting the delicate balance between energy security and geopolitical stability in the Middle East. With both Qatar and Iran at the centre of potential conflict, international diplomatic efforts may prove crucial to prevent escalation and maintain stability in the energy-dependent region.
