With the approach of Eid, the Paturia ferry terminal in Manikganj has experienced a surge in passenger traffic, and along with it, a rise in extortion attempts targeting local transport operators. In a timely operation, police apprehended two young men red-handed while collecting illegal fees from auto-rickshaw and CNG drivers.
The incident occurred on Thursday (19 March) around midday, near the Nilachal Transport Counter at the Paturia terminal. The individuals arrested were identified as Syamon Munshi (19) and Sourav Munshi (19), both residents of Teghuri village in the local area. Syamon is the son of Habil Munshi, while Sourav is the son of Montaz Munshi.
According to police sources, the increased passenger and vehicle flow during the festive period has emboldened certain criminal elements. Syamon and Sourav reportedly demanded between 100 and 200 taka from each vehicle as “fees,” targeting drivers who were transporting passengers home for Eid.
A police team from Shibaloy Police Station, under the leadership of SI Hasan, observed suspicious activity at the auto-CNG stand and launched an operation, capturing the two men in the act.
Shibaloy Police Station Officer-in-Charge, Md. Monir Hossain, stated, “No form of extortion or harassment will be tolerated at the Paturia ferry terminal. Legal action is underway against the arrested individuals.” He added that, following preliminary questioning, a case will be filed and the accused will be sent to jail via court proceedings.
Police have intensified patrols and surveillance in the terminal area to ensure passenger safety. Local drivers and commuters have expressed their satisfaction with the operation, hoping that consistent enforcement will significantly reduce extortion and other irregularities.
The table below summarises the key details of the arrest:
