Infant Found in Bag at Kumarkhali Pond

In a shocking incident in Kustia, police recovered the body of a newborn from a pond in Khagrabaria village, Kumarkhali Upazila. The discovery was made on Thursday at approximately 12:30 pm, prompting widespread concern among local residents.

According to Mohammad Ali, a member of Ward No. 4 of Panti Union in Kumarkhali, the pond belongs to a resident named Azizur Rahman and is situated alongside the main road. “Several boys were fishing by hand in the pond when one of them lifted a heavy bag. Initially, they assumed it contained fish. However, upon opening it, they were horrified to find the body of a female newborn inside,” he said.

The news quickly spread throughout the area, attracting a crowd of curious onlookers and creating a sense of shock and unease in the community. Mohammad Ali estimated the infant’s weight to be around two kilograms and speculated that someone might have placed the newborn in the bag and disposed of it in the pond.

Kumarkhali Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Jamal Uddin, confirmed the recovery, stating, “The newborn’s body has been retrieved and sent to Kustia General Hospital’s morgue for autopsy. The identity of the infant remains unknown at this stage.” He further assured that the police are investigating the incident and urged locals to provide any information that could help identify the parents or those responsible.

Preliminary reports suggest that the infant may have been one to two days old at the time of death. Authorities hope that the post-mortem examination will clarify the exact cause and timing of death. The police have also advised the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activity in the vicinity.
