Extortion Attack in Pirojpur Leaves Five Injured

In a disturbing incident of extortion-related violence, a prominent businessman in Pirojpur was attacked at his home after refusing to pay a demanded bribe, leaving five people injured and valuables stolen.

The attack occurred on Thursday afternoon around 4:00 pm at the residence of Golam Rasul, 57, in the Cholisha area of Tuna Union, Pirojpur Sadar. According to reports, assailants stormed the house armed with sharp weapons after Golam Rasul declined to pay a longstanding extortion demand. The attackers also snatched gold jewellery from the family during the assault.

Among the injured were Hanif Sheikh, Nargis Begum, Hamida Begum, and Rina Begum, in addition to Golam Rasul himself. Eyewitnesses described a chaotic scene as the attackers used crude weapons, striking indiscriminately at Rasul and his family members.

Golam Rasul told police that the main aggressors were Alamgir Sheikh (42) and Sojib Sheikh (32), who had been demanding 5 lakh taka in extortion payments over an extended period. After his repeated refusals, the duo, accompanied by 3–4 accomplices, resorted to violence.

During the attack, Rasul attempted to shield himself with his left hand from a sharp machete blow, resulting in a serious injury to his thumb. The assailants also attacked other family members who tried to intervene. Hamida Begum reportedly had a gold chain weighing nearly 1 bhori, valued at approximately 2.5 lakh taka, forcibly taken from her neck.

Rina Begum was subjected to an attempted sexual assault during the incident, compounding the severity of the attack. Neighbours and local residents rushed to the scene and transported the injured to Pirojpur Sadar Hospital, where they received initial treatment.

Golam Rasul has filed a written complaint with Pirojpur Sadar Police Station, prompting an investigation into the attack and the extortion ring allegedly operating in the area. Authorities have assured that efforts are underway to apprehend the perpetrators and enhance security in the locality.
