In a unique continuation of a century-old tradition, more than 200 devout followers of the Qadriya Sufi order in five villages across Begumganj, Kabirhat, and Noakhali Sadar upazilas will observe Eid al-Fitr a day earlier than the mainstream national celebration, aligning their festivities with the lunar calendar as followed in Saudi Arabia.
The celebrations are scheduled for Friday, 20 March 2026, when congregational prayers will be held in ten local mosques across the three upazilas. Villagers will gather for Eid prayers at 8:00 am, following the time-honoured customs passed down through generations.
The five villages participating in the early Eid observance are:
Lakshminarayanpur and Harinarayanpur in Noakhali Municipality
Ramabhallavpur in Ghoshbagh Union, Kabirhat
Basantbag and Fazilpur in Gopalpur Union, Begumganj
Adherents of the Qadriya order state that their practices are rooted in the teachings of the revered Sufi saint, Abdul Qadir Jilani (R.), and are consistent with the traditions followed in Saudi Arabia. This includes not only the early observance of Eid al-Fitr, marking the end of Ramadan, but also the celebration of Eid al-Adha later in the year.
Mohammad Siraj Mia, a Qadriya follower from Basantbag village, explained, “Following the path shown by our ancestors, we begin our fasts and celebrate Eid in harmony with Saudi Arabia’s lunar calendar. We maintain this practice every year without exception, ensuring continuity with our spiritual heritage.”
Authorities have also taken precautionary measures to ensure a peaceful observance. T.M. Mosharraf Hossain, Superintendent of Police, Noakhali, confirmed that law enforcement agencies have completed maximum security preparations in the villages to facilitate a safe and orderly celebration for all participants.
