Storm Warnings Loom Over Eid Celebrations

As the nation prepares to celebrate the joyous occasion of Eid al-Fitr, weather authorities have issued warnings of potential thunderstorms and heavy rainfall that could disrupt festivities across Bangladesh. The Bangladesh Weather Observation Team (BDWOT) has cautioned that this year’s pre- and post-Eid period may see Kalbaishakhi (nor’wester) storms, particularly affecting open-air Eid congregational prayers.

Speaking to local media on Thursday, 19 March 2026, BDWOT officials highlighted that the period from the day before Eid through the following three days could witness intermittent storms and rain across various regions. The forecast suggests that Eid day itself may experience the most severe weather, potentially affecting early morning outdoor prayers.

According to BDWOT, a strong Kalbaishakhi system could enter from the north-west on the eve of Eid, posing high risks in Mymensingh, Sylhet, Dhaka, Khulna, and Barishal divisions. Open-air Eidgahs may face disruption due to rain and gusty winds during congregational prayers, particularly in the morning.

The expected movement of the storm is as follows: starting from Rangpur and Rajshahi in the early hours, spreading to Khulna, Barishal, Dhaka, Mymensingh, and Sylhet by mid-morning, and reaching Chattogram division by afternoon. A second wave of storms and showers may occur later in the day, prolonging adverse weather conditions nationwide.

BDWOT also noted that the day before Eid, Friday, 20 March, could begin with partly cloudy skies in many regions, but conditions may deteriorate after midday. Heavy rainfall and Kalbaishakhi-related storms are predicted across northern and central divisions, while some southern districts may also experience severe weather. By the day following Eid, conditions are expected to improve gradually, with morning showers along coastal divisions but predominantly dry and normal weather elsewhere.

BDWOT has urged the public, particularly those attending outdoor Eidgahs, to exercise caution, avoid open fields during storms, and monitor real-time updates. Authorities have also advised organisers to consider temporary shelters or rescheduling activities if necessary.

While the festive mood is expected to be slightly tempered by the threat of adverse weather, officials are optimistic that the majority of Eid celebrations can proceed safely with vigilance and preparation. The forecast underscores the importance of blending traditional celebrations with precautionary measures to safeguard participants during Bangladesh’s Kalbaishakhi season.
