Putin Affirms Russia’s Support for Iran

Russian President Vladimir Putin has extended greetings to Iranian leaders on the occasion of Nowruz, assuring Tehran that Moscow will remain a close and reliable partner. The Kremlin announced the message on Saturday, emphasising Russia’s commitment to maintaining strong bilateral ties. However, analysts note that the depth and scope of Moscow’s support for Iran remain a subject of debate.

According to Iranian sources, despite enduring multiple crises since the 1979 revolution that overthrew the US-backed Shah, Tehran has not always received substantial assistance from Moscow during its most challenging periods. Nonetheless, the Kremlin’s recent message reinforces Russia’s intention to project solidarity with Iran amid ongoing regional tensions.

The Kremlin statement confirmed that President Putin congratulated Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and President Masoud Pezeshkian on the Persian New Year. Putin reportedly wished the Iranian people courage and resilience during difficult times, affirming that Moscow will continue to act as a steadfast friend and dependable ally.

Russia also highlighted the wider context of regional instability, citing US and Israeli military operations that have plunged the Middle East into a broader crisis, contributing to global energy supply challenges. The Kremlin condemned any threats to Iran’s Supreme Leader, describing an alleged assassination plot against Ayatollah Khamenei as a “cruel act.”

Separately, media reports, including from Politico, suggested that Moscow had proposed a mutual intelligence arrangement with Washington: in exchange for the United States ceasing the provision of Russia-related intelligence to Ukraine, the Kremlin would halt its intelligence sharing with Iran. The United States reportedly rejected the offer. The Kremlin has since dismissed these claims as false.

The Nowruz message comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions, as Iran faces ongoing pressure from Western powers while simultaneously engaging in strategic cooperation with Russia. Observers suggest that Russia’s declaration is part of a broader effort to consolidate alliances in the region and counterbalance US and Israeli influence.
