Lalmbagh Student Dies in Tragic Hanging

A seventeen-year-old student, Farhan Rahman Jihad, tragically took his own life by hanging at a residence in the Posta area of Lalmabag, Dhaka, on Sunday, 22 March, at around 7:00 pm. The incident occurred at a rented four-storey house located adjacent to the Shahi Mosque in the locality.

Relatives, discovering Jihad in a critical state, rushed him to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared him dead at 8:30 pm.

Family and Background

Jihad was the youngest of three siblings, with two elder brothers and a sister. His father, Fazlur Rahman, hails from Haimchar Upazila in Chandpur district. Jihad was a tenth-grade student at Islambag Ideal Model School and College. The family had been living in the rented Lalmabag Posta house for several years.

His elder brother, Fahim Rahman Rudra, recounted that Jihad had a romantic relationship with a female classmate from the same school. According to Fahim, the two spent the afternoon together outside before returning home. Later in the evening, Jihad reportedly had a heated argument over the phone with the girl, who informed him that she no longer wished to maintain the relationship.

Circumstances of Death

Following the dispute, Jihad allegedly locked himself in his room. Despite prolonged calling and knocking, he did not respond. Family members eventually broke down the door, only to find him hanging from a ceiling fan, an orna (scarf) around his neck. He was immediately taken to hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

Police and Hospital Statements

Inspector Md. Faruk, officer-in-charge of the Dhaka Medical College Hospital police camp, confirmed that Jihad was brought in by family members already deceased. The body has been kept at the morgue for autopsy, and Lalmabag Police are conducting an ongoing investigation into the incident.
