Last year, following the Palghat incident, Merchant publicly expressed anger and dismay, declaring that he sometimes felt “ashamed to be a Muslim” due to societal injustices. He has also strongly opposed remarks suggesting that he received fewer opportunities in his career because of his Muslim identity—a comment reportedly made by fellow musician A.R. Rahman.
