Eid Holiday Ends: Offices, Banks Reopen

After a seven-day closure for Eid‑ul‑Fitr, government offices, banks, insurance companies, and other key institutions across Bangladesh have reopened today, signalling a return to full-scale administrative and economic activity. Office hours will resume from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm, reinstating normal working schedules across the country.

The extended holiday saw millions of government employees, private-sector workers, and business professionals travelling to their hometowns to celebrate with family. In anticipation of today’s reopening, a significant number of these individuals have already begun returning to Dhaka, creating noticeable congestion at major transport hubs. Bus terminals, railway stations, and river ports across the country have reported high passenger volumes as people rush back to the capital.

Eid‑ul‑Fitr, one of the most significant religious festivals in the Muslim calendar, was celebrated nationwide on 21 March with due religious observance and festive spirit. The government had declared a seven-day public holiday from 17 March to 23 March to accommodate the celebrations.

The newspaper industry, which plays a vital role in information dissemination, also observed a holiday. The Newspaper Owners’ Association of Bangladesh (NOAB) declared a five-day break from 19 March to 23 March, which concluded today alongside other sectors.

The reopening of offices and financial institutions marks the resumption of regular economic activity, including banking operations, insurance services, and government administrative functions. Analysts suggest that the swift return to work will help stabilise short-term economic flows disrupted by the holiday period.

The following table summarises the reopening schedule and key sectors resuming operations today:

Sector Reopening Date Office Hours Key Notes
Government Offices 24 March 2026 9:00 am – 5:00 pm All administrative functions active
Banks 24 March 2026 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Full banking services restored
Insurance Companies 24 March 2026 9:00 am – 5:00 pm Client and claims services active

Transport authorities have urged commuters to plan their travel carefully due to peak traffic, while banks and corporate offices have prepared to handle the surge in customer activity. The reactivation of these sectors is expected to restore the country’s administrative and commercial rhythm to its pre-holiday pace.

With the conclusion of Eid festivities, Bangladesh is now witnessing a gradual return to its usual operational tempo, which will benefit both public services and private enterprises. Economists and market observers note that such timely resumption of work is critical for maintaining overall productivity and economic stability in the immediate post-holiday period.
