Rajair, Madaripur, Bangladesh – A fruit trader was brutally killed during a “salish” (village mediation) meeting in Rajair Upazila, Madaripur, in what police describe as a premeditated attack linked to a minor theft dispute. At least five others, including the victim’s son-in-law, were injured in the assault, which sparked further violence in the area.
The incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Midpara area of Amgram Union. Eyewitnesses report that the attackers, supporters of a rival family, lured the victim and others under the guise of a mediation meeting, only to launch a violent assault. Following the attack, the mob reportedly set fire to four residential houses belonging to the accused, who subsequently fled the scene.
The deceased has been identified as Zakir Sheikh, son of Nurjaman Sheikh of Majumdarkandi village, who ran a fruit business near the Rajair bus stand.
The confrontation originated after a theft was reported from the home of Sohel Bepari, brother of local trader Rasel Bepari. The victim family filed a written complaint at Rajair Police Station. On Tuesday, local community elders organised a salish with the family of Majid Khan, ostensibly to resolve the issue. According to police, Rasel Bepari was initially attacked during this meeting. When others, including women, attempted to intervene, four more people were assaulted.
Later, under the pretext of another mediation, Zakir Sheikh, father-in-law of Rasel, was summoned to the attackers’ residence. Upon his arrival, he too was assaulted with sharp weapons by Majid Khan, his sons, and their supporters. Injured victims were rushed to Rajair Upazila Health Complex, where Dr. Al Yasa declared Zakir Sheikh dead on arrival.
In the aftermath, enraged locals set fire to four houses belonging to the accused. Police and fire service personnel responded to control the situation, and additional law enforcement personnel have been deployed to maintain order in the area.

Rasel Bepari, one of the injured, told reporters, “This was a planned attack on my father-in-law. I never imagined that a minor theft would escalate into such a brutal murder.”
Inspector (Investigation) Md. Kutub Uddin of Rajair Police Station confirmed that the attack was linked to long-standing land disputes and the recent theft. “We are working to apprehend all those involved and ensure justice. Additional police have been deployed to maintain peace in the locality,” he said.
The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of village mediation processes, which are traditionally used to resolve local disputes. Residents expressed shock at the violence, noting that minor disagreements should not escalate into lethal attacks, highlighting the need for increased law enforcement oversight.
