Young Man and Woman Drown in River

Tragedy struck at around noon today at the Kaliganga River near the old launch ghat adjacent to Balirtek Bazar in Manikganj Sadar, when two young individuals drowned while bathing. According to local sources, they had entered the river for a swim, but after a prolonged absence from the water’s surface, a woman accompanying them raised the alarm by shouting from the riverbank.

Prompted by her cries, local residents rushed to the scene and plunged into the river, conducting an extensive search. Both individuals were eventually recovered in a semi-conscious state. They were immediately transported to the emergency department of Harirampur Thana’s 50-bed hospital. Despite swift medical attention, the attending doctors pronounced both victims dead. Their bodies were subsequently returned to their homes.

Local sources confirmed that the young girl initially struggled in the water. Akash, who was a proficient swimmer, attempted to rescue her, but in the process, both were pulled under by the river’s strong current. Akash was recovered first, while the girl was found approximately 20–30 minutes later.

Witnesses noted that the river’s current had intensified due to recent rains, making rescue efforts extremely challenging. Authorities reported no external injuries on either body, suggesting that the cause of death was drowning. Police have launched an investigation to determine the full circumstances of the incident.

Residents of the area expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy and offered condolences to the families. Local officials have urged river-goers to exercise caution, particularly during the monsoon season, and emphasised the need for enhanced safety measures along popular bathing spots to prevent similar incidents in the future.

The incident highlights the hazards posed by open water, even for skilled swimmers, and serves as a grim reminder of the importance of vigilance and safety near rivers.
