BRAC Bank Extends Banking to Hinterlands

Banking in Bangladesh has entered a new phase of inclusion, expanding far beyond its traditional urban footprint to serve communities in some of the country’s most remote and difficult terrains. What was once a service largely confined to city-based branches has now evolved into a decentralised system that reaches forest settlements, river islands, hill regions, and disaster-prone coastal areas.

A key driver of this transformation is BRAC Bank’s agent banking network. By appointing authorised local representatives, the bank has created a practical and cost-effective way to deliver financial services directly within communities. These agents operate from small outlets, yet they provide a comprehensive range of services that mirror those available in conventional branches.

The geographical complexity of Bangladesh has long hindered the expansion of traditional banking infrastructure. Frequent river erosion, dispersed island communities, dense forests, and remote uplands have made it difficult and expensive to establish permanent branches. As a result, a large segment of the population remained excluded from formal financial services for many years.

BRAC Bank’s agent banking initiative has addressed this gap by bringing essential services closer to people’s homes. Customers can now open savings and current accounts, invest in deposit schemes, transfer and receive remittances, access credit facilities, and receive government benefits without travelling long distances.

Agent Banking Network Overview

Region Type Key Locations Number of Outlets
Forest-adjacent areas Shyamnagar, Paikgacha, Dacope, Fakirhat, Koyra 17
Coastal and island areas Charfassion, Teknaf, Kutubdia, Hatiya, Subarnachar, Mongla, Kalapara 76
Hill regions Ramgarh, Panchhari, Manikchhari, Matiranga, Longadu, Dighinala 11
Nationwide total Across Bangladesh 1,120

In areas bordering the Sundarbans, including Shyamnagar and Koyra, these agent outlets have become vital centres for financial activity. Residents who once had limited access to secure savings facilities can now deposit and manage their funds with ease and confidence.

The benefits are equally visible in coastal and island regions such as Teknaf and Hatiya, as well as in remote hill regions. Access to reliable banking services has stimulated local trade, reduced dependence on physical cash, and strengthened transparency in financial dealings.

The initiative has also made a significant contribution to financial inclusion. More than 60,000 customers have opened accounts through the agent banking network, with many engaging with formal banking services for the first time. This has resulted in deposits exceeding 200 crore taka and loans amounting to more than 65 crore taka, supporting economic growth at the community level.

In addition to providing transactions, agent banking plays an important role in improving financial awareness. Local agents often guide customers on managing savings, making informed financial decisions, and using credit responsibly. This has helped to establish long-term trust between the bank and the communities it serves.

The integration of digital technology has further strengthened the system. Biometric verification, real-time transactions, and secure connectivity to centralised banking platforms ensure that customers receive efficient and dependable services, even in remote locations.

For communities living in forests, river islands, hill regions, and coastal areas, banking is no longer distant or inaccessible. It has become a regular and trusted part of daily life. Through its agent banking network, BRAC Bank is advancing financial inclusion and contributing to a more balanced and sustainable economic future for Bangladesh.
