Following disappointment at the 1954 World Cup, Italy appointed Alfredo Foni, a manager who had already guided Inter Milan to successive league titles. Foni introduced a disciplined defensive system that would later be associated with the evolution of catenaccio, built around a sweeper and a compact back line designed to frustrate opponents and strike on the counter.
However, the system exposed Italy’s greatest weakness: a lack of clinical forwards. To compensate, Foni relied on oriundi—foreign-born players of Italian heritage such as Juan Schiaffino and Alcides Ghiggia. Despite their pedigree, many were approaching the twilight of their careers.
Italy were drawn alongside Portugal and Northern Ireland in the 1958 World Cup qualifying group. The campaign began positively with a 1–0 victory in Rome over Northern Ireland. However, the momentum quickly evaporated following a heavy 6–1 defeat to Yugoslavia and a 3–0 loss in Lisbon to Portugal.
By December 1957, Italy’s qualification hopes hinged on one outcome: avoiding defeat in Belfast.
What followed became one of football’s most notorious evenings. Severe fog disrupted travel, preventing the appointed Hungarian referee from reaching Belfast on time. Under public pressure, the fixture was controversially staged as a friendly, with the replay scheduled for 15 December 1957.
The atmosphere in Belfast turned volatile. Spectators invaded the pitch, and Italian players were subjected to physical intimidation. The match descended into chaos, forcing Northern Ireland captain Danny Blanchflower to intervene and escort opposition players to safety.
The unofficial encounter ended 2–2, but it carried no competitive value for Italy.
When the official replay arrived in January 1958, conditions were even harsher: freezing rain, a heavy pitch, and relentless physical play. Italy began with an attacking trio of Ghiggia, Pivatelli, and Dino Da Costa, but were overwhelmed early, falling 2–0 behind within half an hour.
Although Da Costa reduced the deficit, Italy’s fate was effectively sealed when Ghiggia was sent off. Reduced to ten men, they succumbed to a 2–1 defeat, a result that eliminated them from the World Cup for the first time.

Now, 68 years later, Italy once again face Northern Ireland under the weight of history. Having already missed the 2018 and 2022 World Cups, another failure would mark an unprecedented third consecutive absence from the tournament.
